Every year Trieste hosts an unmissable event, the biggest regatta in the world, Barcolana Regatta.
In 1969, the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano, a yacht club from Trieste, had an idea. They would create a regatta, one that epitomised the love affair between their city and the waters around it. A race that was open to everyone, regardless of their experience. And an event that would involve the whole of Trieste in an annual celebration of wind, surf and sail.
Their idea was the Barcolana Regatta, and in the 51 years since it’s grown to become the largest event of its kind anywhere in the world. Every year, on the second Sunday in October, crowds gather to watch more than 2000 yachts compete in a fast and thrilling 15-mile race through the waters north of Trieste.
The Barcolana Regatta is open to everyone, expert or amateur, who wants to take part. If you’d like to join the race, all you need to do is register here. [http://www.barcolana.it/] Currently, registration is open until the evening before the race, but may change in future years.
Don’t own your own yacht? Not a problem. There are several ways you can still be involved, from booking a seat on a racing yacht, hiring a dingy to follow the action up close, to taking to the skies in a helicopter and watching the excitement unfold from above.
Back on shore, Trieste hosts a weeklong Regatta festival, filled with activities for you to experience. Expect events spanning water sports, culture, art, social and educational workshops, all culminating in a firework display on the night before the race. Whether you watch the festivities from the city streets or the comfort of your residence back in Portopiccolo, you’re sure to find it an unforgettable experience.
